Innovative Learning Journey

2nd August 2017
This term we have split the children across our three classrooms based on their Reading goals. In their sessions they are attending guided sessions and some workshops so that they can practise their goals. The children are excited to be moving across the three classrooms, where they are able to work with with other students and teachers.

14th June 2017
Today we planned Collaborative Maths for later in the term. Each teacher will be teaching a different area of Maths (Addition/Subtraction, Multiplication/Division and Fractions) and we have grouped the children based on their assessment data. We will be offering knowledge workshops as well as strategy sessions to help children to achieve their goals for the term.

7th June 2017
On the Teacher's Only Day on Friday, the teachers went to visit other schools to see what their IL journey looks like. We took away some great ideas and also saw some things that we wouldn't choose to do as they are not the right fit for our collaborative team. It was great to get the opportunity to see IL in action at other schools!

Over the past 3 weeks we have been teaching narrative writing skills so the students are able to produce a structured narrative. They have been working on including a title, introduction, problem and solution. The students came up with success criteria to use while writing an independent piece after reading an exemplar. Below is a planning template they are using to organise their ideas.

Next week we will be starting a workshop afternoon across Year 3 related to this term's concept of Creativity. Each teacher will run 1 session per week looking at different art skills and how we could use these to make an environment more creative. Children will sign up for what they are most interested in learning about: multimedia, painting, sculpture, print making or forces science. Each child will create an outcome, and then children will collaborate with children who went to different workshops to design a marble run using the creative skills they have learned. Parents will be invited in to see the finished products. The designs will be submitted to Mr Aukett and he will choose the best one as the inspiration for the new marble run on the senior side.
The Room 18, 19 and 17 teachers are also going to be running workshops on handwriting, phonics and spelling rules. Children will sign up for the workshop that they feel best fits their need.

3rd May 2017
Welcome back to Term 2! We are looking forward to another great term. This term our focus is for the students to try and achieve their goals that were set last term. These were shared at the Parent Teacher Interviews at the end of Term 1. Part of our journey is to support children in knowing about their current learning and creating next steps. We will continue to offer Writing Workshops at the beginning of Term 2 to support the students in achieving their goals. During our first meeting we will be discussing our next steps for the Term.

10th April 2017
Today Room 17, 18 and 19 began our second round of workshops. The children started off with a warm-up lesson where they could learn some skills to practise their goals. After that they moved to their chosen workshop group that they signed up for. Some of the workshops included using conjunctions, punctuation and sequencing. All of these workshops relate to our Writing goals that we have selected based on our Recount Writing this term. Here are some photos of our session today.

Over the past two weeks each class has been trialing using a 'must-do/can-do' system in different subject areas. This system gives children the opportunity to manage their learning time and decide when they would like to do each activity. The students are learning that they need to balance their time to ensure that their activities are completed by the end of the week. As a collaborative teaching group, we have organised a range of activities that can be completed by the children when they are not in their teaching sessions. We are looking forward to using this system in Reading, Writing and Maths.

Writing Workshops

This week we started working collaboratively through Writer's Workshops. The workshops are based on writing skills, e.g. using descriptive language, punctuation, handwriting and sentence building. The students chose the workshop they wanted to attend based on what they knew they needed to work on.

This is students from Rooms 17, 18 and 19 in action during one of our writing workshops.

21st February 2017

We have started the year and begun on our collaborative journey as 3 classes. So far, we have been focusing on the key competency of 'managing self' within our own home classes. We have been encouraging the children to independently take responsibility for their belongings e.g. bringing their book bags to school, looking after their hats and keeping their desks tidy. We have also been encouraging the children to take responsibility for their learning by choosing 'can do' tasks, and managing their time by choosing when they do their 'must do' tasks for the week. As teachers, we have been meeting collaboratively to share what we know about our home class students, and to plan collaboratively. Next week we are starting our first collaborative venture which will be running writing workshops to consolidate the writing skills of describing. Each of the 3 teachers (Niki Powers, Leah Searle and Josie Marsic) will take different writing workshops, which allows children to choose a workshop which addresses a skill that they have identified as a goal.
