Room 18

14th September 2017 - Procedural Writing

Room 18 have been learning to write procedures including our goal, materials and the steps in order. Yesterday we went outside in the sun to write procedures on how to use different pieces of senior playground equipment. We hope to ask some of the Year Twos to follow our procedures to see if we have been detailed and specific enough!

18 August 2017 - Science Experiment - Making Ice Cream!

As part of our 'Exploring Science' unit, Room 17 and 18 have been doing some experiments. The children have been able to sign up to attend a choice of 2 experiments each session, Miss Searle facilitates one and Miss M facilitates one.
Today Miss Searle's group made ice cream!! We were looking at the states solid, liquids and gases and whether you can change a liquid into a solid. We found that you can! Unfortunately we weren't allowed to eat any but Miss Searle had a taste and said it was delicious! The recipe to make the ice cream is below:

What you need:
100 grams salt
500 grams ice
2 snap-lock bags - one large, one small
60ml milk
10 grams sugar
Vanilla essence (a few drops)

Method:
1. Half fill the large plastic bag with ice.
2. Add the salt.
3. Put the milk, vanilla and sugar in the small plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly.
4. Place the small bag inside the large bag that contains the ice and salt mixture. Seal the larger bag.
5. Shake and move the bags around until the mixture in the small bag turns into ice cream. This will take 5-10 minutes.
6. Eat your ice cream! This recipe makes enough ice cream for one person. :)

2nd August 2017 - MOTAT Trip
On the 1st of August, Rooms 17, 18 and 19 went on a trip to MOTAT as a hook for our science topic this term. We had a classroom session in which we followed the scientific process to carry out experiments, a ride on the tram and time to explore the exhibitions. We are all very excited about science now and are looking forward to the term of learning ahead!

2nd August 2017 - Writing Information Reports
This week we have started writing information reports about wild animals. Children researched a wild animal of their choice and some groups have begun writing their reports. They are including an introduction, paragraphs about what the look like, what they do and where they live, and a conclusion. We are also focusing on adding detail to our ideas.

14th June 2017 - Life Education

We have had two sessions in the Life Education Van over the past two weeks. We have been learning about how to tell how other people are feeling by noticing their body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. This will help us be empathetic towards others. We also learned about resilience and being a 'bounce back kid' - bouncing back when something goes wrong. We talked about being a leader vs being a boss - leading by example rather than telling others what to do. We got a lot from it and enjoyed being in a different learning environment!

13th June 2017 - Collaborative Reading Task

This week we had a collaborative task as one of our 'must do' tasks for Reading. Our shared book this week was called 'How Do You Feel' by Anthony Browne. As a follow up activity we worked in small groups to record our ideas about when we feel different feelings, e.g. surprised, curious, guilty. We enjoyed working together and came up with some great ideas!

29th May 2017 - A Special Visitor

Today we had a very special visitor come to our classroom... it was Mr Ayson! He came in for a whole hour to say hello and see the awesome learning that we are doing in Room 18. Mr Ayson also gave us a tutorial about how capital letters for names and titles. We really enjoyed having him in our classroom and sharing our learning with him, and we will invite him back again soon!

3rd May 2017 - Anzac Day Research

On Monday we learnt about Anzac day. First we worked with a buddy to come up with 5 questions that we would like to find out about Anzac day or World War 1 or 2. We focused on asking open questions. Then as a class we shared our knowledge and read books - some of our questions were answered with the knowledge we gained. Finally we went off in our pairs to research the answers to our remaining questions on the internet. We talked about using google and how to find specific information rather than typing in a general term like 'Anzac Day'. We enjoyed our mini inquiry! We also did some Anzac poppy art which will be up on the wall soon.

11th April 2017 - Whanaungatanga in action!

On Monday, three Year 6 children came into our class to teach us a hip hop dance. This was related to their inquiry of Whanaungatanga - connecting with others. Room 18 children loved learning something new and connecting with some of the Year 6 children.

20th March 2017 - Swimming!

We are halfway through our 2 weeks of swimming lessons with Hilton Brown. We are learning and practicing skills like floating, kicking and arm strokes. We also play swimming games to build our confidence in the water. We know that it is so important to learn to swim in New Zealand because we are surrounded by the sea and we need to be able to keep safe in the water. We are working towards swimming sports on the 29th of March.

2nd March 2017 - Te Tuhi Arts Centre Trip!

On Tuesday we visited the Te Tuhi Arts Centre to do some art relating to our identity. This links with our topic this term: Whanaungatanga - relationships and connections. We had a great trip! Thank you to the parents who came along to help.
