Volume and Capacity
This week Room 17 have been exploring volume and capacity in Maths. To start with we looked at various container sizes and ordered them to show which ones we thought would hold the most-least amount of water.
We talked about cups, millilitres and litres as units of measurement. Later this week we will be making estimations and finding out how many cups (250mls) fit in each of our containers.

MOTAT Trip!
Today Room 17 joined Room 18 and 19 at MOTAT. As part of our concept 'Exploration' we visited to do some exploring of our own. To begin with we had our teaching session called 'Bust that Myth' where we got to explore different stations and either prove or disprove the statements on the tables. After that we had a great tram ride and then were able to do some more exploring around. We saw some amazing things and were able to interact with lots of the displays.

Here are some photos of the day!

Native Bird Writing

Next week Room 17 will be writing information reports during Writing time. At our library session we chose books that featured information about NZ native birds. Today in collaborative groups we wrote questions that we could research using these books. We also researched on a website to find out more information. Here are some photos of us collaborating and working together.

22nd June 2017
This week Room 17 has been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have been using language such as faces, edges, corners, vertices, sides and points to identify the parts of shapes.

We learnt about different kinds of shapes, some that we had not heard of before! These included; pentagonal prisms, triangular prisms, spheres and square based pyramids.

On Wednesday we made some 'nets' of shapes using 3D wooden blocks as a guide. We traced around all the faces and created our own paper 3D shapes. Here are some photos of our creations!

We also started to explore Measurement. We started by making estimations of how long we thought our hands and fingers would be. In pencil you will see our estimations. After we estimated lengths we measured our fingers and hands with 1cm cubes to get the actual length. These measurements are written in coloured pencil. Lots of us were very close! Here are a few examples of our work. The rest can be viewed in our classroom.

Life Education
Today was our first session in the Life Education Caravan with Harold. We learned about body langauge and how we can tell how people might be feeling based on this. We also discussed resilience and how we can 'bounce back' from situations. We talked about empathy and 'putting ourselves in their shoes'. We are looking forward to our next session on Thursday!

6th June 2017
Today we had a goal setting session in the afternoon where we updated our goals. We worked with a buddy to decide if we had achieved our previous goals and talked about which new ones to choose. Each pair had to prove that they had achieved their goal by using evidence from their Writing and Maths books. The buddies gave feedback and suggestions on how they could achieve their new goals.
